The Grey Rock in the Woods

…is the Cornish name for St Michael’s Mount. I went there just under two months ago, on an unseasonably grey, raw day. The bad weather was something of a blessing – not just in terms of photographic possibilities but in terms of tourists. If you’ve ever been to Mont Saint-Michel, you’ll know what I mean. The similarities are obvious, the differences welcome. The lower slopes haven’t fallen prey to a plague of souvenir stalls and restaurants trying to fleece you out of €75 for… an omelette.
Perhaps in the middle of summer the crowds become intolerable, but that day it felt genuinely isolated. Here is my walk to and around the island.
